Careers Education

The aim of the Careers Department at Sacred Heart College is to help students develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of the world of work so that they can make informed choices at key transition points in their education and ultimately in their future career. We have a wide and varied careers programme that spans all key stages that allows our students to become effective decision makers while giving them the freedom to investigate the pathways that are best suited to their individual needs.

Key Stage 3

In Year 10 pupils follow a career programme that prepares them for making their GCSE choices and provides them with opportunities to investigate career pathways. Pupils are introduced to Labour Market Information and the importance of STEM careers in the Northern Ireland job market. They take part in GCSE Options workshops and information evenings to carry out in depth job studies to help them understand the world of work.

Key Stage 4

In Year 11 the emphasis is on exploring all the pathways open to them in their future and learning how to market themselves to employers. A range of interactive learning strategies are used to develop and enhance self-confidence and self-esteem. Guest speakers and business field trips and workshops help to keep them up to date with options available to them.

In Year 12 pupils prepare for and undertake a work experience placement. They participate in an interview skills and mock interview workshop. The focus of this year is Post-16 options and pupils are fully supported through this process by their teachers, DELNI careers advisors and options workshops.

By the time our students reach Post-16 studies they have a great aptitude for self-reflection and decision-making. The Post-16 programme is designed to allow students to think independently about their career goals, research third level education options and to keep up to date with labour market trends. Open day visits, collaborative workshops with local employers and a work experience programme are used to support the students.

We fully support our students through UCAS and to direct entry universities with all students receiving detailed instruction and individual mentoring.
