English as an Additional Language
Students with English as an Additional Language are well integrated into the life of the school and are very well supported so they can achieve their full potential.
An initial interview is arranged where parents and the students are guided through the pupil data form and standard school procedures. The student is given a 'Welcome Booklet' which contains extracts in five different languages which is explained in detail. Any questions or worries are addressed. The student is given a start date and parents are invited to contact the school if they have any further concerns.
The student is given a timetable (pictorial if necessary), a Homework Planner and introduced to the Year Head and Form Teacher. S/He is given a buddy in the class who can help with any difficulites which might arise.
Students are tested to ascertain a CEFR level of English so that support and meaningful targets can be set for them. Extra English classes in small withdrawal groups are timetabled accordingly.
Interpreters are used for Parent Teacher Meetings and Information Evenings. Important letters are translated into the students' first language.
Newcomer students may sit EDI JET SET Exams which gives them an internationally recognised qualification in English. Where possible, they may sit GCSEs in their first language. We have an Inclusion and Diversity Officer who works closely with staff to ensure that Newcomer students are fully integrated into Sacred Heart College.
