Youth Sport

'Developing a Shared Society Through Youth Sport' is a cross community and cross border project jointly managed and implemented by County Sligo Vocational Education Commitee (VEC) in the Republic of Ireland and the Western Education & Library Board (WELB) in Northern Ireland and is funded under the Peace III programme implemented by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

This project is designed through the model of Youth Sport to challenge attitudes towards sectarianism and racism and support conflict resolution involving strategic collaboration between the public and community sectors in the Omagh, Fermanagh and Sligo region. This innovative service delivery model aims to build on Peace and Reconciliation strategies to develop a shared society through the medium of sport. This will be achieved through the engagement of Local Authorities, Education, Health, Sports Councils, schools and local community sports clubs. Key activities will have a direct focus on cross community, new community and cross border relationships to address issues of trust, prejudice and intolerance.

Project aim:

‘‘to use the medium of sport to promote reconciliation through cross community and cross border interactions, that positively influence negative attitudes underlining sectarian and racist behaviour.''
